How to Minimize Strain on Your HVAC System

During the hot California summers, it’s not uncommon for homeowners to run their HVAC systems around the clock. While most HVAC systems were built for heavy use, running them constantly still puts a strain on the system. 

Taking steps to minimize the strain can make a big difference in your energy bills and add to the overall life of your system. Here are five tips to minimize the strain on your HVAC system.

1. Be Mindful of Opening Doors and Windows

Opening doors and windows during the summer is not completely avoidable. However, minimizing the opening of doors and windows can make a big difference in the strain you are putting on your HVAC system. 

When you are constantly opening doors and windows, you are letting hot air in, which means your HVAC system has to kick on more often, or even run constantly, to keep your home cool. Try not to leave doors and windows open, and be mindful of the strain it can have on your system.

2. Fix Drafty Windows

You’d be surprised how much air can escape out of small leaks in windows. Even a minor break in a window seal can impact your home’s overall energy efficiency. When cool air escapes from your home, it means that your HVAC system has to work harder to keep the indoor temperature consistently cool. 

An effective way to stabilize the system and minimize strain is to ensure that all of your windows are properly sealed.

3. Change Your HVAC Filter

One of the best long-term investments in your AC system that you can make is regular maintenance, which includes changing your filter regularly. Your AC filter needs to be changed every one to six months depending on the size of your home, whether you have pets or not, and other factors. 

When your filter is not changed frequently enough, it can become clogged, which means your system has to work harder to force air through. This puts unnecessary strain on your system and can even lead to a breakdown.

4. Clean Your HVAC Ducts

A lot of pollutants, from dust to debris to pet hair, pass through HVAC ductwork. Over time, this debris can build up. When the ductwork in your HVAC system becomes dirty, not only is it bad for your indoor air quality, but it can also put added strain on your system. 

Most HVAC manufacturers recommend a professional duct cleaning every 1-3 years, depending on your household situation.

5. Turn Up the Temperature

There’s no way around it; the cooler you set your thermostat, the harder your HVAC system will have to run. When it is hot outside and your thermostat is set to a particularly low temperature, that puts a lot of strain on the system. To help alleviate the strain, turn up the temperature by a few degrees.
