In houses with forced-air heating and cooling systems, ducts are used to distribute conditioned air throughout the house. In a typical house, however, about 20 percent of the air that moves through the duct system is lost due to leaks, holes, and poorly connected ducts. The result is higher utility bills and difficulty keeping the house comfortable, no matter how the thermostat is set.
How do you know that your home has poorly performing ducts?
- You have high summer and winter utility bills;
- You have rooms that are difficult to heat and cool;
- You have stuffy rooms that never seem to feel comfortable;
- Your ducts are located in an attic, crawlspace, or the garage;
- You find tangled or kinked flexible ducts in your system.
A duct system that is well-designed and properly sealed can make your home more comfortable, energy efficient, and safer.
The duct system that runs throughout your home and delivers all the air from the furnace (heating unit) and condensing unit (air conditioning unit) may be what keeps you warm in the winter and cool in the blazing heat of summer, but if your duct system is damaged, broken, or torn then you are wasting energy, which causes your utility bills to increase. Damaged ductwork allows air to escape inside walls or even cooling down your attic instead of delivering the air where it is intended inside your home. There are several ways that can cause damage to your ducting; Age & corrosion, rodents and animals, and home repairs or maintenance (cable service man, plumber, etc.).
At Rowland Air, we commit to excellence by providing our staff with the technology to show homeowners the crushed areas, broken joints, or missing attachments that result in air loss within their home. Call today for your in-home duct repair consultation!
Per the CA State HERS Rater.Org: “The greatest energy use in California homes is for central air conditioning and heating. Most homes with central air conditioning and heating systems have ducts that were never properly sealed . The average home’s ducts leak around 30 % of the conditioned air outside the home. These leaks are taking money straight out of your pocketbook. Properly sealed ducts will lower your energy bills and reduce pollution inside your home.”
Rowland Air can help you with all your duct sealing and replacement needs!! Call today for your in-home duct repair consultation!
Duct Testing (HERS) –
What is a HERS rater? What is the benefit of obtaining a HERS report?
HERS raters are State Inspectors certified by the California Energy Commission (CEC) to rate homes in California according to the Home Energy Rating System (HERS). These ratings include field verification and diagnostic testing to determine energy efficiency levels among homes tested for duct efficiency, envelope leakage, refrigerant charge verification and building insulation for compliance with current building efficiency standards.
As of October 1, 2005, you must have your home or office ducts tested for leaks when you have a central air conditioner or furnace installed or replaced. Ducts that leak 15 % or more must be repaired to reduce the leaks. After your contractor tests, seals the ducts, and fills out the proper forms, you have an approved third-party HERS Rater to check and make sure the duct sealing and duct testing was done properly. Home Energy Audit and Assessment
A home energy assessment, also known as a home energy audit, is the first step to assess how much energy your home consumes and to evaluate what measures you can take to make your home more energy efficient. An assessment will show you problems that may, when corrected, save you significant amounts of money over time.
