How Wildfire Smoke Affects Your HVAC System & What Filters to Use

Most residential HVAC systems installed after 2000 can accommodate MERV 13, but blower capacity, existing static pressure in the duct system, and filter slot dimensions all factor into what’s safe for a given home. Set the thermostat fan switch to “On” rather than “Auto.” The “Auto” setting only runs the fan when the system is actively heating or cooling. “On” runs the fan continuously, circulating air through the filter even between heating and cooling cycles. If your system has a fresh air intake option, set it to recirculate indoor air rather than drawing from outside.

Two things to avoid during smoke events in Southern California: whole-house fans and evaporative coolers, sometimes called swamp coolers. Both pull unfiltered outdoor air directly into the living space. In a region where swamp coolers are common due to the hot, dry climate, this is a step that national advice often misses entirely.
