Heat Pump Acting Up?
Heat Pump Repair

Year-round systems need a tech who knows both sides of the job.

Heating & Cooling in One System

Heat Pump Repair for Santa Clarita's Hot Summers & Cold Nights

A heat pump in the Santa Clarita Valley rarely gets a break. It cools through triple-digit summers, then heats through winter nights that drop below freezing in Acton and Agua Dulce. That year-round workload wears parts faster than a system that only runs one season.

Rowland Plumbing, Cooling, Heating & Electrical has repaired heat pumps here since 1987. Our technicians test the heating and cooling systems on every visit, and you get the price before any work begins.

Heat Pump Problems We Repair Across the Santa Clarita Valley

Some of these are normal, like a brief whoosh and a puff of steam during a defrost cycle. If you’re not sure what’s happening, give us a call.

Deciding Between a Heat Pump Repair & a New System

Most heat pump problems are fixable. These four questions help you decide when a repair stops being worth it:

How old is it?

Most heat pumps last 10 to 15 years with regular service. Because heat pumps here run hard in both seasons, some land toward the lower end of that range. A unit under eight years old is almost always worth repairing.

Which part failed?

Capacitors, contactors, fan motors, and defrost boards are routine repairs. A failed compressor on an older system is usually the point where replacement makes more financial sense.

What does it cost to run?

Older heat pumps with low efficiency ratings cost more to operate in summer and winter. If your bills keep rising with no change in how you use the system, it's worth pricing out a newer model.

Can it keep up with the extremes?

A system that falls behind on the hottest afternoons or coldest nights may be undersized, or it may be low on refrigerant. We check for both before recommending anything.

When a replacement makes sense, we’ll price it side by side with the repair so you can compare. Learn more about heater installation and our financing options.

Heat Pump Repair Questions From Santa Clarita Homeowners

How much does it cost to repair a heat pump in Santa Clarita?

The $89 dispatch fee covers the visit and the diagnosis, and it's credited toward the repair if you move forward. After that, we price by the job instead of the hour. Common parts like capacitors and contactors cost far less than compressor or reversing valve work, and you'll see the number before we start.

Sometimes. Heat pump air comes out warm but not hot, usually around 90 degrees, so it can feel cooler than air from a furnace. The system also runs short defrost cycles that briefly blow cooler air. If the air stays cold for more than a few minutes, the reversing valve or the backup heat may need attention.

Yes. Modern heat pumps keep working well below freezing, and most have backup electric heat strips that switch on during the coldest stretches. If your home isn’t staying warm on cold nights, the backup heat or its controls are a common culprit.

Long run times are normal in mild weather, since heat pumps are designed to run steadily at lower output. If it runs nonstop and never reaches the set temperature, a dirty filter, low refrigerant, or an undersized system is usually the cause.

Twice a year: once before summer and once before winter, since it handles both jobs. Our heater maintenance covers the heating side, and Rowland Deluxe members get a cooling and a heating tune-up every year.
